Most people searching for a Tinder alternative are not unhappy with dating. They are tired of the format: hours of swiping, matches that never reply, and long text chats with someone you have never heard speak. If that sounds familiar, a video-first app may suit you better. If you love swiping and want to date people near you in person, Tinder may still be the right tool. This page tries to be fair about both.
We make Titli, so we are not neutral. Titli is not affiliated with or endorsed by Tinder.
What Tinder is
Tinder is a dating app owned by Match Group, the company that also owns Hinge and OkCupid. It launched in 2012 and made the swipe famous: you see a profile, swipe right if you are interested and left if not, and you can chat when both people swipe right.
Tinder has paid subscriptions on top of its free version: Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold and Tinder Platinum.
On video, the picture has changed. Tinder rolled out an opt-in video chat called Face to Face globally in October 2020, but its help centre now says Face to Face has been deprecated. Tinder's help centre also describes Speed Date, a live one-to-one video speed-dating event made of consecutive three-minute sessions, run on a web app outside Tinder.com and, according to that page, available only in Los Angeles, California.
What Titli is
Titli is a live video chat app made in India by GenZ Philam Entertainment. On Google Play it is listed in the Social category, not Dating. It is built for meeting new people, and video dating, getting to know someone face to face on a call, is one of the ways adults use it. Many people simply come to talk and make friends.
Titli is only for adults aged 18 and over (see our Terms).
How connecting works:
- No mutual match needed to talk. Tap to connect in Match and you are connected with a member of the opposite gender at random for a 1-on-1 video call (no age or location filters; Match calls are billed per minute to the man), or browse Explore and call someone from their profile.
- Face to face first, not text first. Conversations usually start on a video call, with mic and camera controls you manage.
- Group spaces too. Watch live streams, chat with the host and other viewers, or listen in an audio room with mic seats.
- Messages later, if it clicks. Private messages support text, photos, voice notes and gifts, and incoming messages can be auto-translated.

Swiping versus talking
Swiping is efficient at one thing: filtering lots of people quickly on photos and a short bio. It is less good at telling you whether you will actually enjoy talking to someone. That is why so many matches go quiet after "hi".
Video flips the order. On Titli you find out within a minute whether a conversation flows, whether the other person listens, and whether you want to talk again. If it clicks, follow them and keep chatting. If not, end the call kindly and move on. Our guide to video dating vs swiping goes through the trade-offs in more detail, and the video dating app page explains Titli's approach.
Who should pick which
Pick Tinder, or another dating app, if:
- You want to meet people near you in person and plan dates in your city.
- You like browsing many profiles and choosing before you talk.
- You use an iPhone and want a native iOS app.
Pick Titli if:
- You would rather see and hear someone before swapping messages for days.
- You want to flirt, chat and get to know people respectfully on video, inside one app.
- You want an app in your own language: Titli works in English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Urdu and Arabic.
- You also enjoy group spaces like live streams and audio rooms.
What Titli expects from you
Titli works when people treat each other well:
- Be friendly and respectful, and end the call if it is not working for either of you.
- Do not ask for personal details, numbers or social handles early on.
- Nothing explicit. It is against our Community Guidelines, and still snapshots from video calls may be reviewed by moderation for safety, with an on-screen indicator.
- Do not ask for or offer money, payment or meetings outside the app.
- Use report and block if someone makes you uncomfortable.
