A dating app where you talk first

If you are searching for a dating app, you have probably already tried one or two. You know the routine: upload photos, write a short bio, swipe, wait for a match, then try to keep a text conversation alive long enough to find out whether there is any spark. Titli takes a different route. You meet people on a 1-on-1 video call, and you decide whether you like talking to them by actually talking to them.

To be clear about what we are: Titli is listed in the Social category on Google Play, not Dating. It is a live video chat app for meeting new people. Video dating, getting to know someone face to face on a call, is one of the main ways adults use it, and that is what this page is about.

How Titli works as a dating app

There are two ways to meet someone new on Titli.

1. Match. Open the Match tab and tap Tap to connect. Match connects you with a member of the opposite gender at random for a 1-on-1 video call, billed per minute to the man. You can set interest filters so Match leans towards people who share something with you, such as music, films or travel.
2. Explore. Browse people in the Popular and New lists, filter by country and open any profile. From there you can send a message or start a video call.

If a conversation goes well, follow the person and pick it up later in private messages, which support text, photos, voice notes and gifts. Incoming messages can be auto-translated into your language, which helps when the other person writes in a language you read less easily.

What is different from a swiping dating app

Neither model is "better" for everyone. If you want to set detailed preferences such as distance, age range or relationship goals before you talk to anyone, a traditional dating app does that and Titli does not. Match connects you with someone of the opposite gender at random, with no age, location or relationship-status filters. What it offers instead is speed: you find out in a minute whether you enjoy someone's company.

Is this dating app right for you?

Titli tends to suit you if:

• You find text-only chats slow, flat or easy to misread.
• You are comfortable on camera, or willing to get comfortable.
• You like the idea of meeting people from other parts of India, not just your postcode.
• You want to use an app in your own language: Titli works in English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Urdu and Arabic.

What it costs

Titli is free to download. Video calls use coins and are billed per minute to the man; a woman pays only when she calls a man directly from his profile. Match tickets give you a free match call for a limited number of seconds, which is often enough to say hello and see if the conversation clicks. Safety on a video-first dating app

Talking on camera with someone new needs a few safeguards, and we have built them in:

• Accounts are tied to a phone number or Google sign-in. Titli is not anonymous, so people who are removed cannot just reappear. Your phone number is never shown to others.
• Block or report anyone from their profile or chat. Report reasons include harassment, nudity, fake profile, spam and underage user.
• Call moderation. Still snapshots may be captured during video calls and reviewed by moderation for safety. An on-screen indicator shows when this happens, and you agree to it at sign-up.
• Clear rules. Our Community Guidelines ban explicit content, harassment, scams and recording others without consent, and they say not to ask for or offer money, payment or meetings outside the app.

Making a good first impression on video

A first video date is less stressful than it sounds. Sit facing a window or a lamp, hold the phone at eye level and find a quiet corner. 3. Add a clear profile photo and a few interests.
4. Open Match and tap to connect, or browse Explore.
