Two phones showing the Titli app: a 1-on-1 video call and a live stream with chat messages

Online dating means meeting potential partners through the internet instead of only through friends, family, college or work. For many adults in India it has become an ordinary part of social life, alongside the traditional routes. But "ordinary" does not mean easy. This guide explains how online dating usually works, what tends to go wrong, and how to make it a better experience.

We make Titli, a live video chat app, so we have a point of view. Titli is listed in the Social category on Google Play, not Dating, but plenty of adults use it to get to know people face to face on video. We will explain where that helps and where another kind of app may suit you better.

Titli is only for adults aged 18 and over (see our Terms).

The three main styles of online dating

Most apps and sites fall into one of three styles. Knowing which one you are using helps you set the right expectations.

1. Swipe-and-match apps

You see a stream of profiles and say yes or no to each. When two people both say yes, they can message. It is quick and casual, and it rewards strong photos. The downside is that many matches never turn into conversations.

2. Profile-heavy and matchmaking-style apps

These ask you to fill in long profiles, answer questions or state what you are looking for, and then suggest compatible people. They suit people who know what they want and have time to read profiles carefully.

3. Video-first apps

You meet people on a live video call first and decide afterwards whether to keep talking. Titli works this way: the Match tab connects you with a member of the opposite gender at random for a 1-on-1 video call, and Explore lets you browse profiles and call or message someone directly. Our video dating app page explains it in detail.

What the first few weeks usually look like

People are often surprised by how much effort online dating takes at the start. A realistic picture:

  • Many conversations go nowhere. That is normal and not a judgement on you. People get busy, lose interest or were never that serious.
  • A few conversations are genuinely good. Those are the ones worth your time. Put your energy there instead of trying to talk to everyone.
  • Your profile matters more than you think. A clear photo of your face and two honest lines about what you enjoy do more than a long list of demands. Our guide on how to write a dating profile shows how.
  • It gets easier with practice. The first few video calls can feel awkward. By the tenth, you will have favourite questions and know when to wrap up politely.

Online dating in an Indian context

A few things are specific to dating online in India, and they are worth thinking about honestly.

Language. Many people are more relaxed in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali or another language than in English. Titli works in nine languages, English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Urdu and Arabic, and incoming chat messages can be auto-translated into yours.

Privacy at home. Many adults live with family or flatmates. Video calls need a quiet corner and earphones. Some people prefer audio first; Titli's audio rooms are a low-pressure way to hang out without a camera.

Family expectations. Some people date openly, others keep it private for a while. Neither is wrong. Respect whatever the other person tells you about their situation, and do not pressure anyone to share more than they want.

Different intentions. Some people are looking for marriage, some for a relationship, some just want to flirt and talk. There is no filter for this on Titli, so ask early and kindly: "What are you hoping to find here?" It saves both of you time.

How video calls change online dating

The biggest weakness of text-only dating is that you cannot see or hear the other person. Tone gets lost, jokes fall flat and you can chat for days with someone who turns out to be very different from their photos.

A short video call solves much of that. Within a few minutes you know whether you laugh at the same things, whether they listen, and whether they are the person in the pictures. If it is not working, you both move on politely. On Titli you can end any call at any moment, and Match tickets give a free match call for a limited number of seconds, so a first hello does not have to cost anything.

Staying safe while dating online

Online dating safety is mostly common sense, applied consistently:

  1. Keep your full name, home address, workplace and financial details private until you truly trust someone.
  2. Never send money, gift cards or "loans" to someone you met online, however convincing the story. Our guide to romance scams in India shows how these usually start.
  3. Do not share anything on camera that you would not want recorded. Titli's Community Guidelines ban explicit content and recording others without consent.
  4. Use block and report freely. On Titli you can block or report anyone from their profile or chat.
  5. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it usually is. See our list of online dating red flags.

Titli's safe online dating page goes through all of this in more depth.

Choosing where to start

If you want to filter by distance and meet people nearby, a traditional dating app is designed for that. If you want to hear someone's voice and see their smile before investing hours in messages, try a video-first approach. Many people use more than one app, and that is fine. What matters is that the app you choose is honest about what it is, takes safety seriously and makes it easy to leave a conversation that is not right for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is online dating safe in India?

It can be, if you protect your personal details, never send money to people you have not met, and use block and report tools. Choose apps that require sign-in and have clear rules.

How is Titli different from other online dating apps?

Titli is a video-first social app. Instead of swiping on photos, you meet people on a 1-on-1 video call through Match or from their profile in Explore. It is listed in the Social category on Google Play.

Can I say what kind of relationship I want on Titli?

There is no relationship-status filter. You can mention it in your profile or simply ask early in a conversation what the other person is hoping to find.

Do I have to show my face on video calls?

You control your camera and mic during a call and can end it at any time. Most people find conversations go better when both faces are visible.

Who can use Titli?

Only adults aged 18 and over. Every account is tied to a phone number or Google sign-in.
