If you have watched a live stream on almost any social app, you have probably seen it: a little animation floats across the screen, the host smiles and says thank you, and someone's name pops up in the chat. That is a virtual gift. Live streaming gifts have become a normal part of how people show appreciation online, but the way they work, with coins, prices and animations, can be confusing the first time.
This guide explains the general idea in plain words, then how it works on Titli specifically. Most importantly, it covers how to stay in control of your spending.
What are virtual gifts?
A virtual gift is a small digital item you send to someone during a live stream, a call or a chat. It usually appears as an animation: a flower, a heart, a crown, a car zooming across the screen. Bigger gifts tend to have bigger, longer animations.
Gifts have no physical form and you cannot use them outside the app. Think of them as a public "well done" or "thank you" that everyone in the live can see. People send them to cheer on a host they like, to celebrate a moment, or simply to say hello in a fun way.
Why apps use coins instead of rupees
Almost every app that has gifts uses an in-app currency, usually called coins, diamonds or something similar. You buy coins with real money, then spend coins on gifts and other features.
There are a few practical reasons for this:
- Speed. Sending a gift with coins you already hold takes a single tap, without a payment screen interrupting the live.
- Small amounts. Paying ₹2 or ₹5 at a time through a payment gateway would be slow and clumsy. Coins let you spend in small steps.
- One balance for many things. The same coins often cover gifts, calls and premium features.
The downside is that coins can make spending feel less real than handing over cash. That is why it helps to know roughly what your coins are worth in rupees, and to keep an eye on your balance.
How gifts and coins work on Titli
On Titli, coins are bought inside the app with UPI, cards or netbanking through secure payment gateways. Your coin balance is then used for several things: video calls (which are billed per minute in coins), gifts, and some premium features.
Gifts on Titli are animated, and you can send them in three places:
- In live streams, where the animation plays for everyone watching. You can browse lives in the Popular, New, Following and Scheduled tabs.
- During 1-on-1 video calls, as a friendly gesture in the middle of a conversation.
- In private messages, alongside text, photos and voice notes.
Some lives on Titli also have paid entry, and some are followers-only. Celebrity profiles may offer subscriptions or bookable private sessions paid in coins. You never have to pay for any of these. Plenty of people watch lives, chat and follow hosts without spending anything. You can read more on our virtual gifts page.
Titli also gives coins through a daily bonus and simple tasks, and through referral rewards when you invite friends. VIP membership is optional and includes daily bonus coins among other perks.
Set a budget before you open the app
The easiest way to enjoy gifting without regret is to decide your limit before you start, not in the middle of an exciting live.
- Pick a monthly amount that you would be comfortable spending on entertainment, the same way you might budget for a film or eating out.
- Buy coins in smaller packs that fit that amount, instead of large packs "because they are better value".
- Check your balance before joining a live, and stop when your budget for the month is used up.
- Keep your payment details private and avoid saving payment methods on a phone others use.
- Review what you spent at the end of the month, and adjust if needed.
If you share a phone with family, especially with children, be extra careful about who can access your account and payment methods. Titli is for adults 18+ only.
How to avoid pressure to spend
Live streams are designed to be lively, and that energy can sometimes turn into pressure. A good host thanks gifters warmly but never makes viewers feel guilty for not sending anything. Watch out for these signs:
- Someone repeatedly asks you directly for gifts or coins.
- You feel you have to send a gift to be noticed, to stay in a conversation, or to "prove" you care.
- A person you met recently asks you to buy coins for them, send money outside the app, or share UPI details or an OTP.
That last one is a red flag for a scam on any app. Never send money outside an app to someone you have met online, and never share OTPs. If someone pressures you like this on Titli, you can block and report them, and our Community Guidelines do not allow scams. For serious fraud in India, report it on https://cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930.
It also helps to remember that a gift is optional appreciation, not a ticket to anything. Saying "great live, thank you" in the chat is a perfectly good way to support someone.
What about refunds?
Refund rules for coins and digital items are different on every app, and they are set out in each app's terms. Digital purchases are often treated differently from physical goods, so do not assume you can undo a purchase. Before you buy, read the relevant section of the Terms of Service. If you think you were charged by mistake, contact the app's support team as soon as possible with your payment details and the time of purchase. For Titli, write to genzphilam@gmail.com.
The healthy way to think about gifts
Gifts can make a live stream more fun and give you a way to say thanks to someone whose company you enjoyed. Treated as a small, planned entertainment expense, they are harmless. Treated as a way to win attention or keep up with others, they can quietly get expensive.
Spend only what you planned, only when you genuinely want to, and remember that your attention and kind words in the chat are valuable too.
